Michael O. Slobodchikoff is a political scientist whose work explains how states use institutions, treaty networks, and strategic signaling as instruments of power in international politics. His research focuses on Russian foreign policy, alliance dynamics, and great power competition, with particular attention to how major powers structure relationships to maintain influence, manage conflict, and shape regional order.

His scholarship provides a framework for understanding how cooperation and rivalry coexist in the modern international system. By analyzing the interaction between formal agreements and informal practices, he shows how states leverage institutions not merely as neutral forums, but as tools to advance strategic objectives under conditions of uncertainty and competition.

Slobodchikoff is Professor of Political Science and Director of the Center for Eastern and Central European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies at Troy University. He is the author and editor of multiple books on international security and diplomacy, including Building Hegemonic Order Russia’s Way, India as Kingmaker, and American Global Leadership, which examine the evolution of global power structures and the challenges facing the contemporary international order.

He has been featured in international media outlets including BBC World News and Deutsche Welle, where he provides analysis of major geopolitical developments, including the war in Ukraine, NATO strategy, and shifting patterns of global competition. His commentary connects academic research to real-time policy debates, offering clear explanations of complex international dynamics for global audiences.

In addition to his academic and media work, Slobodchikoff contributes to policy discussions on great power competition, alliance strategy, and international security. He serves on the Board of Directors of VPA Reports.
